El canotier (también conocido como boat o gondolero) es un sombrero de paja de copa recta, parte superior plana y ala corta, plana y rígida, normalmente adornado con una cinta de color, o negra.
El canotier se creo en 1880. Era propio de los gondoleros de Venecia, que lo solían adornar con una cinta larga (nastro del doppio), para distinguirse de los oficiales de marina. También es símbolo de los colegiales de Oxford. A finales del siglo XIX, el sombrero se puso de moda en Francia, por la exaltación de la navegación “du canotaje”, de ahí su nombre. Paralelamente los inmigrantes italianos lo pusieron de moda en América, donde obtuvo su máximo esplendor en la primera mitad del siglo XX.
Coco Chanel eligió el canotier como símbolo de la nueva era, consiguiendo imponer el sombrero como uno de los símbolos de la nueva mujer. El primer triunfo de Coco se produjo durante una visita al hipódromo antes de la I Guerra Mundial. Tocada con un sombrero canotier y un traje sastre se enfrentó a plumas, rellenos y damas encorsetadas. Todo París comenzó a hablar de sus sombreros.

It is normally made of stiff sennit straw and has a stiff flat crown and brim, typically with a solid or striped grosgrain ribbon around the crown. Boaters were popular as casual summer headgear in the late 19th century and early 20th century, especially for boating or sailing, hence the name. They were supposedly worn by FBI agents as a sort of unofficial uniform in the pre-war years. It was also worn by women as well, often with hatpins to keep it in place. Nowadays they are rarely seen except at sailing or rowing events, period theatrical and musical performances (e.g. barbershop music) or as part of old-fashioned school uniform, such as at Harrow School. Since 1952, the straw boater hat has been part of the uniform of the Princeton University Band, notably featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated Magazine in October, 1955. Recently, soft, thin straw hats with the approximate shape of a boater have been in fashion among women.
Coco Chanel choosed the canotier as a simbol of the new age, making it the sign of the new women. Her first triumph was done at the Races before the First World War. Wearing a canotier and a simple suit she faced the other women´s robes, filled with thousand feathers and corsetts. All Paris began to talk about her hats...
